Privacy Policy

The Genesis Mission is a federal initiative led by the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate American scientific discovery through artificial intelligence and advanced computing. This Privacy Policy explains what information genesis.energy.gov collects, how we use it, and the choices you have about that information.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the limited information needed to operate this site and to keep the public informed about the Genesis Mission.

Email Address (Newsletter Signup)

If you submit your email address through the signup form in the site footer, we validate and store the email address you provide as a request for future mission updates.

Server and Request Logs

When you visit genesis.energy.gov, Cloudflare processes request and network metadata to deliver and protect the site. Cloudflare Workers observability also records operational information about Worker requests and errors.

• Cloudflare uses request metadata to route traffic and protect the service.
• Worker observability helps diagnose errors and monitor site operation.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

From public visitors, we do not collect, store, or process:

• Your name, mailing address, or phone number
• Social Security numbers or other government identifiers
• Financial or payment information
• Health, biometric, or other sensitive personal data
• Research data, models, or proprietary scientific information from users

Authorized content-management administrators use email-and-password accounts and authenticated sessions. They may upload media, which is stored in Cloudflare R2. These administrative features are separate from the public visitor experience.

3. How We Use Your Information

• Email address: to record your request for future Genesis Mission updates.
• Server logs: to deliver the site and diagnose technical issues through Cloudflare Workers observability.
• Security logs: to apply the newsletter endpoint's IP-derived limit of 60 requests per 60 seconds.

5. Data Security

We use technical and organizational measures to protect the limited information collected through this site, including:

• HTTPS encryption for traffic between your browser and the site
• IP-derived rate limiting on the newsletter endpoint
• Email-and-password authentication and sessions for content-management administrators
• Separate Cloudflare D1 and R2 storage for structured content and uploaded media

6. Your Rights & Choices

You can:

• Use the site without sharing an email: all public content on genesis.energy.gov is available without signing up for updates.
• Limit what we log: our request logs are recorded server-side and cannot be blocked by browser extensions. You can still use your browser's privacy controls, a VPN, or Tor to reduce what we see in those logs.
• Browser storage: public application code does not write cookies, local storage, or session storage. Administrative content-management sessions use browser cookies.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the Genesis Mission evolves. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
